Prospective teachers of students in the elementary grades will be required to take the Praxis II Elementary Education: Instructional Practice and Applications (5019) exam in order to receive licensure and certification to enter into professional practice. Most examinees have completed a bachelor’s program in elementary or middle school education, or alternative certification, prior to taking the exam. Upon successfully passing the examination, you will have proven that you have acquired the necessary level of mastery to succeed in the position of an educator of elementary school children. The testing requirements for passing are determined by the state.
During the exam, you will be given a total of two hours and 50 minutes to complete 124 questions, divided into 130 minutes for selected-response and 40 minutes for four constructed-response questions. The questions will cover the following Content Categories, which align with the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), state curriculum standards and national standards. The exam will test not only your knowledge of this content, but pedagogical principles and processes as well.
- Reading and Language Arts
- Social Studies
- Art, Music and Physical Education
The four short constructed-response questions are designed to assess how well you can respond to tasks that require thorough written responses. At least one of the questions will ask you to show that you have an understanding of interdisciplinary instruction, with the remaining questions testing your ability to analyze and solve.
The examination is computer delivered, meaning you will be able to skip questions and come back to them in order to maximize use of your time. You are advised to answer each question to the best of your ability and leave no question unanswered, as your final score is determined only on the number of correctly answered questions with no penalty for incorrect responses.
