In order for prospective teachers of students in the elementary grades to achieve licensure and certification they are required to take and successfully pass the Praxis II Elementary Education: Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment (5017) exam. Most applicants have completed a bachelor’s degree program in elementary or middle school education, or an alternative certification program. Passing scores for the examination and other requirements are determined by the state.
The computer delivered examination consists of 120 selected-response questions that you will be able to skip and return to as needed with a 130-minute time limit to fully complete the exam. You will be given the opportunity to learn this interface prior to beginning the exam. The questions are broken down into five different Content Categories, which are are aligned with the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), state curriculum standards and national standards:
- Reading and Language Arts
- Social Studies
- Art, Music and Physical Education
Within each category, you will need to have a grasp of Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment. As a whole, the exam is designed to test your knowledge of this content and pedagogical principles and processes to ensure you have achieved the required level of mastery to succeed in a professional position within the field of elementary education. Questions will cover:
- Your understanding of curriculum planning.
- Your understanding of instructional design.
- Your understanding of assessment of student learning.
- Problems that teachers routinely face in the classroom.
- General issues.
Your score is based on the number of correctly answered questions with no penalty for incorrect answers. You are advised to maximise the use of your time to answer each question to the best of your ability, but leave no question unanswered.
