The Praxis II Pennsylvania Grades 4–8 Subject Concentration: English Language Arts (5156) exam is a computer delivered test designed to assess whether prospective educators have the knowledge, skills and abilities deemed necessary to perform as a Pennsylvania middle school English language arts teacher. The test is aligned with the Pennsylvania Academic Standards for Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening for Grades 4-8. It will test your knowledge of concepts that fall within three Content Categories:
- Reading Informational Text
- Reading Literature
- Types of Writing
- Quality of Writing
- Media Literacy
- Literacy Development

When you register for a test date, you may also choose a testing location convenient to you from a list of approved testing sites.
On test day, you will be given time to learn the interface of the computer delivered assessment. Then, you will be given one hour and 30 minutes to respond to 90 selected-response questions. As you go through the questions, you will be able to skip them and come back at any time throughout the exam. While it is beneficial to you to use this feature for trickier questions, it is recommended to leave no question unanswered.
Your score will not be penalized or subtracted for an incorrect answer, with your final score being determined only on the number of correct responses, Your score will be available on-screen immediately following the exam with an official score report mailed to you approximately two weeks following completion of the test. Passing scores are based on the requirements of the individual state.
